Former sportsman Lesha Shultes lives in Moscow with his ailing mother. They spend their evenings watching the box, and now and again he pays a visit to his brother in the army. None of the family’s acquaintances knows what Shultes lives on or what he writes in the notebook he always carries. One day, Shultes sees 10-year-old Kostik picking pockets in the subway, and takes the boy under his wing. And then, in the hospital where his mother has just died, a young woman catches Shultes’ eye. Wanting to find out more about the stranger, he breaks into her flat – and begins to think about his own life.
