SIERANEVADA

goEast Gurus

In 2011, Cristi Puiu’s AURORA was shown in the Competition section at goEast – a year later the director returned to the festival as president of the jury. SIERANEVADA celebrated its world premiere in 2016 in Cannes. In the film, an extended family comes together in Bucharest for a funeral service. According to Orthodox beliefs, 40 days after death the soul of the departed patriarch returns one last time to the closest circle of family, before appearing before its creator. Alas, the priest who was booked to assist in fulfilling the ritual is running behind schedule and in his tardiness all sorts of feelings, entanglements and traumata emerge in the narrow confines of the apartment. The camera work and mise-en-scene follow the precisely staged tumult and provide humorous yet also bitter glimpses into the interior life of a family and the state of this world.
