Elements of Hungarian and Central Asian mythology are fused in Marcell Jankovics' second feature-length animation film SON OF THE WHITE MARE. With its stunning imagery, the film depicts the adventures of Treeshaker and his two brothers Stonecrumbler and Ironrubber, accompanied by an electronic soundtrack inspired by the chants of Tibetan monks. Upon its release in 1981 the film proved underwhelming at the box office: Jankovics had obviously created a work that was too complex for children, while the "adult audience" in Hungary couldn't manage to relate very well to the film's fairy-tale-like nature. In the interim, the unabashedly psychedelic film has gone on to attain rightful cult status and received the full digital remastering treatment in 2020.
