SOUTH BY NORTH

Jakub leaves his monastery at the age of 29 in order to travel north to the Baltic, which he has never seen. En route he meets the somewhat nervous but highly attractive Julia, who is anxious to escape from her life as a prostitute in Warsaw, and joins him on his journey. Their acute lack of funds makes the long journey to the coast a slow business, giving them plenty of time to get to know each other, to talk about their emotions, thoughts and worries. Jakub is suffering from cancer, Julia is HIV-positive. PO£UDNIE-PÓ£NOC, as director Karwowski tells us, is a simple film about the power of love – and about how God is often encountered in the guise of very strange individuals.
