SWEET EMMA, DEAR BöBE

Symposium

Emma and Böbe, two countrygirls, have been teaching Russian at a primary school in Budapest. After the end of socialism, they have to change the classes over to English as quick as they can. Because they cannot afford their own apartments, they share a room in a residence for teachers. To improve their economic situation, Emma works as a cleaning-woman; Böbe fishes for foreigners in hotel-bars, hoping they will buy her a dinner. Emma and Böbe fi nd themselves in a fight for their existence. Unwilling to lose the social status they have achieved during the old regime, they fight in order not to become what they used to be: country-girls.
