THE BALCONY MOVIE
Opening Film
“I’m making this film, from the balcony” – “What’s the theme?” – “The theme is life”. Over the course of two whole years, at various hours of the day and night, Paweł Łoziński captures the personal stories of a wide range of individuals passing on the path in front of his Warsaw balcony. He positions his camera, waits until his film's heroes enter the image frame and encourages them to speak honestly, personally and openly about their existence as humans, their feelings and the meaning of life. Some of them stroll but a single time past his balcony, others end up entering the frame over and over – like Robert, fresh out of prison the first time we meet him, who provides Paweł with regular updates on his efforts to get a grip on his life.
With this documentary social experiment, Paweł Łoziński has created a particularly contemporary work of art: each of these chance encounters exposes itself to be an emotional confession, intimate dialogue and touching portrait of diverse individuals, whose philosophical and existential thoughts reveal a new angle for perceiving the world, as well as today's Poland. With his unconventional static camerawork and minimalist setting, Paweł doesn't set out in search of inspiring stories – this time, he lets them come to him instead.
