THE BLACK HOLE
Competition
When extra-terrestrials land in the midst of an apartment block settlement on the edge of an Estonian city, they end up altering the lives of everyone that they encounter. Friends Maret and Sirje, who dream of a better life in Finland, sense their chance when the aliens signal their need for volunteers to participate in their research into the human species. Mariliis escapes a physically abusive relationship and finds refuge with fitness trainer Uma – until a monstrous spider puts her budding romance to the test. Jüri falls in love too, with a mysterious neighbour, while attempting to protect his mother Ilmi from the unfair dealings of a predatory Austrian vacuum cleaner salesman – until she too is paid an unearthly visit. THE BLACK HOLE is based on the novellas of Armin Kõomägi and the short story "A Life Worth Living" by Andrus Kivirähk. Moonika Siimets deftly adapts the original texts for the screen, forging a connection between the fantastical and the insanity of everyday life. Her sci-fi comedy blends quirky humour with the raw reality of Estonia's working class. In three episodes, she tells of desires both large and small, with a melancholic touch and a flair for the absurd.
