THE BLACKS

The Croatian War of Independence, 1991: in defiance of the cease fire which has just taken effect the Croatian special forces unit “Crnci” sets out on a last mission to recover their dead comrades from a minefield and carry out a retaliatory strike. Instead of an action-packed war movie, in which friends and foes are clearly recognizable, directors Jurić and Dević deliver a realistic psychogram of a group of people in an extreme wartime situation. In chamber drama-like fashion, sparing with words but full of small gestures, the war crimes of Croatia’s own army are treated here for the first time in a Croatian feature film, addressing the inner contradictions of Croatian post-war society in the process.
