When a student’s work is inexplicably excluded from taking part in a scientific competition, young scientist Jarosław takes it upon himself to calm the protesting students. The lecturer Jakub refuses to discuss the matter however. As Jarosław gradually realises that every official decision at the university is subject to Jakub’s backhanded manipulation, he sets out to prove to the lecturer that the latter doesn’t stand a chance against the forces of justice. Zanussi delivers an adept examination of nepotism and conspiratorial dealings in the world of academics.
