The film describes in free poetical form the life of the 18th-century Armenian poet Aruthin Sayadin. Different stages in the poet’s life are presented in visionary and heightened episodes without any narrative framework: the poet as a child, the poet at the court of a monarch, his first meeting with the muse of poetry, the poet as a monk in a church, the poet digging his own grave. Paradzhanov’s imagery in this film is characterized by austere beauty, anti-Naturalism, by forceful abstraction and metaphoric power. A version of the film re-edited by Sergei Yutkevich was released for distribution under the title THE COLOUR OF POMEGRANATES.
