THE CURSE OF THE HEDGEHOG

Symposium

“My donkey means more to me than my husband and my children. But now he’s dead. If I had a donkey now, I’d live like a member of the government.” – Turica doesn’t just love her donkey, she knows how much he has made her life easier. A life that is marked by poverty and inhumane work conditions. For she and her family, all members of the Baiesi group, weave baskets and brooms and attempt to sell them in the harsh winter in a region that is not exactly wealthy itself. Matter-of-factly observed and yet empathetic, this documentary film has played a large role in overcoming stereotypical Roma representation in cinema.
