An adventure film based on a true story: KGB agent Ladejnikov is dispatched to track down the German war criminal Haas, who during WW2 tested psychochemical weapons on Soviet prisoners-of-war, and after the war continues his experiments with dangerous substances in a small university town in the west. Ladejnikov hopes to identify Haas with the assistance of Savuškin, a Moscow actor and former prisoner-of-war. After a number of perilous adventures Savuškin returns safely to Moscow, secret documents in his bag. Ladejnikov, however, falls into the hands of the counterintellegence. In the USSR this political thriller was seen by 35 million viewers.
