Mela and Przemek originally came to Warsaw to look after their uncle’s apartment, but they quickly stumble upon a fantastic portal to another world: aside from providing access to the building’s other floors, the elevator in the former Nazi embassy also doubles as a time machine. Before they know it, the two are back in 1939, where they bump into Hitler and his entourage and manage to wreak minor havoc in the embassy in the days leading up to the outbreak of the Second World War. The result is a highly entertaining if perhaps grotesque comedy full of ridiculous situations and bizarre characters. Alas, as with any attempt to wring some humour out of Herr Hitler, the laughter gets caught in one’s throat at times here too.
