THE EVENING SACRIFICE

Symposium

A salvo of strictly ritualized salutatory shots announces the beginning of the celebrations commemorating the end of the siege of Leningrad in World War II. The sky above the Neva lights up with fireworks, and young people dance in the streets. The documentary footage is accompanied by a sound collage combining original sounds, pop hits, and Orthodox hymns. With the signs of imminent change palpable both in the soundtrack and the gestures of the people shown, the film almost prophetically anticipates the spirit of 1990.
