Shortly after the end of civil war, Dyuyshen, who served in the ranks of the Red Army, is hired to work as a teacher in a village. The former soldier experiences a significant amount of hostility from the locals. This animosity grows in earnest when Dyuyshen allows Altynai, a girl, to attend the local school, breaking with decades-long traditions. The villagers waste no time expressing their rage, and the school is burnt to the ground. Still, the hope for change lives on.
