Stations in the life of a fledgling natural scientist in search of the meaning of life and death: this initiation process enables Franciszek to break out of his self-imposed isolation and repair his familial bonds. But no sooner has he done so than he learns he is suffering from heart disease and must face the prospect of dying. The rebellion of his body, and nothing else, forces him to abandon his radical quest for truth and knowledge. The cameraman and alpine mountaineer Stanisław Latałło, who would die in the Himalayas one year later, played the lead role, in which he fused with his character to become a model for the young intelligentsia of his generation.
