80-year-old Mr. Ungár (played by Academy Award winner Jiří Menzel) travels from Bratislava to Vienna with a pistol in his briefcase intending to confront former SS officer Dr. Graubner, who executed Ungár’s parents. Alas, instead he runs into Graubner’s son Georg (Peter Simonischek). Georg, who has an alcohol problem, has refused to reflect on his father or investigate his past at all up until this moment, but now the pedantic Mr. Ungár awakens his interest. The two embark on a journey to Slovakia. The knowledge that these two unlikely companions gather about the past and themselves in the process brings them closer together.
