The paparazzo Servais falls in love with the actress Nadine, who pays the bills by appearing in soft-core pornos and has been married for years to Jacques, a silly collector of film stills. Servais finances a production of Shakespeare’s “Richard III” by taking out a loan from the mob and casts Nadine for a prominent role in the play, only to have tragedy take its course after the critics pan her performance. With THE MAIN THING IS TO LOVE, Andrzej Żuławski created an atmospherically dense and melancholy web of relationships embedded in the milieu of the French-Italian mafia and the merciless acting profession. The film’s box office success enabled Żuławski to return to his Polish homeland.
