Next to MORITURI Brauner consistently names THE MARTYR as the other film in his body of work that is really important to him – so important that he never gave up on the project, in contrast to various comparable stalled productions. The story of the Polish doctor who took care of hundreds of orphans in the Warsaw Ghetto and chose to go to his death with them in 1942 also offered a lot of potential aspects for Ford to identify with: the film comes across as a reaffirmation of those cultural and spiritual roots which he had largely ignored in the Polish People’s Republic. A masterpiece, which doubtless seemed like an anachronism back then, but which was in truth released into the world against any zeitgeist, for all time.
