THE MECHANISM

Serbia has gained quite a reputation over the past twenty years among fans of extreme cinema: works such as Mladen Đorđević’s THE LIFE AND DEATH OF A PORNO GANG (2009) or Srđan Spasojević’s A SERBIAN FILM (2010) simply aren’t made anywhere else in the world. What is remarkable is the fact that these films are generally categorised as horror, although in reality they are crime films – even if they display a moral sense whose core nihilism is nightmarish. One of the earliest and in some regards most unrelenting examples of this subgenre (due to its straight forwardness) is the terror thriller THE MECHANISM, the second feature from Michael Mann superfan Đorđe Milosavljević, one of the most prominent members of the Pajkić group, who can be seen as a sort of post-ideological Serbian equivalent to the aforementioned Hičkokovci.
