THE NEEDLE

Symposium

After a long stay in Moscow, Moro makes his first trip back to his native city of Alma-Ata in Kazakhstan. He finds that his girlfriend Dina has turned into a junkie, and is being kept in a situation of fatal dependence. Moro abducts Dina and dries her out on the desert-like banks of the Aral lake, which is already semi dried-out. He then takes up the fight against the drugs mafia. THE NEEDLE, one of the most powerful and original filmic documents of the changes initiated by Gorbachev in the Soviet Union, was also a gift to international cinematography. Bursting with visual ideas and enriched with numerous references to classical cinematic modernity, Nugmanov’s first film became one of the most successful Russian films of all time.
