Lithuania, 1947: as the young poet Kostas begins work as a teacher in a village school, the country has already been living under Red Army occupation for three years. Partisans, dubbed "Forest Brothers", are fighting for their country's independence. The inhabitants of the small settlement on the edge of the woods initially treat Kostas with suspicion due to his pro-Soviet poems. However, he soon manages to win their trust, while also getting closer to the resistance fighters. Just when he has been accepted into their midst, the Soviet MGB reminds him of an old deal they made. Based on the real-life case of the author Kostas Kubilinskas, the film tells the story of a poet and a nation poised between subjugation and self-determination, in a manner both oppressive and striking.
