In the aftermath of the Hungarian revolution of 1848/49 Austrian soldiers arrest a group of peasants accused of being separatists. Interrogated and tortured by the powers-that-be, the peasants are systematically lied to, blackmailed and played off against each other to make them betray each other and, above all, their leaders. ROUND-UP is considered Jancsó´s best film and has become a Hungarian cult movie due to its continuing ability to move audiences with its demonstration of historical parallels between 1868, 1944 and 1956. Independent of historical restrictions, the movie pictured and at the same time rejected the ways power is abused to oppress humanity.
