In a nomad encampment set against a snowy mountain backdrop, the villagers sing, dance, laugh, cook, take to horseback to scramble for a goat’s corpse, seethe and seek revenge. Lovely Begimai adores hapless Esen. He pines for her too. When the sacred tree of their homeland falls to the axe, herds and nomads are overcome by calamity. Esen is disowned and Begimai’s kinfolk must go into exile. Surviving outside of the clan structure is very difficult in archaic times. Will Begimai and Esen ever be reunited in a duet?
