The basic idea for this film came from Artur Brauner: portions of the plot are based on the childhood memories of his wife Maria, to whom the film is dedicated. Ruth is Jewish, a former cabaret singer still living life to its fullest in spite of her age; she tries to suppress the trauma of her childhood growing up in the Third Reich. Her life changes abruptly when a foreclosure sale forces her to leave her apartment. On the day of her move she meets the young furniture remover Jonas, who is terminally ill and lives in a minivan. This chance encounter develops by and by into a close friendship. In their desire to help one another the two are not afraid to resort to extraordinary measures ...
