Episode film after several stories by Chechov, cast with well-known German actors of the era. Integrated into a tragicomical chain of events is also the novella “Romance with a double-bass” of which several film adaptions have been made. A Russian small town. The wife of a tailor runs away with an illusion artist who roams the country with a troupe of artists. The tailor, who in his spare time plays double-bass in the local band, decides to shoot the illusionist first, then his wife, and finally himself. In the end he doesn’t fulfil his plan though. Instead, he becomes a slave to alcohol and sets his flat aflame while drunk. After the tailor has finally sobered up again, he gets on his way to the engagement celebration with his double-bass. While on the way, he goes for a swim and during this all his clothes get stolen. Naked as he is he runs into the bride who is naked as well. Her clothes got stolen also while she had been swimming.
