VERA DREAMS OF THE SEA
Competition
Sign language interpreter Vera's husband commits suicide, to her complete shock. Just a day before, they had been making plans for their retirement together, and now, along with her struggle to cope with devastating grief, Vera finds herself up against Kosovo's patriarchal society too. Sadly, she can't rely on the law when a conflict over who should inherit the house emerges, forcing her to take her family's fate into her own hands.
Featuring a protagonist who responds to any attempt at intimidation with even more resolve (embodied by lead actress Teuta Ajdini Jegeni with effortless sovereignty), Kaltrina Krasniqi delivers a chilly, patient thriller, in an unflinching examination of a corrupt society that is also hostile to women (and especially widows). Simultaneously gripping and socially insightful, the film paints the emancipating portrait of a woman who brings the universal desire for gender equality to the big screen.
