The dream of home ownership suddenly seems less remote when banks are willing and eager to furnish a loan. For some 120,000 Croats, however, the sweet and simple deal turned out to be misleading if not to say deceptive. Encouraged by politicians and economists, the happy new owner-occupiers went hurtling into the debt trap, burdened with mortgages linked to the Swiss franc. The country’s banking sector, backed by a government allegedly powerless to do anything about the situation, made a mockery of democratic concepts of the rule of law. Oremović shows the fates of those affected as they fight to stave off impoverishment or even bankruptcy.
