VIDEOGRAMS OF A REVOLUTION

Beyond Belonging

Harun Farocki and Andrei Ujica’s documentary examines the Romanian revolution of December 1989, the events which culminated, after bloody battles between protesters and the police and Securitate, in the trial and execution of the deposed dictator Nicolae Ceauşescu. Working exclusively with television footage and other material documenting the course of those momentous few days, the filmmakers focus on visual composition and structures, analyzing their material from a media-theoretical perspective. Watching events unfold in their historical dimension we begin to question the choices underlying what the television medium shows and leaves out.
