WE WILL NOT FADE AWAY
Competition
Andriy, Illia, Lera, Liza and Ruslan are growing up in Donbass, a region in Ukraine where war has been raging since 2014. For the five adolescents, the constant noise of machine-gun fire is just as much a part of everyday life as the typical questions of teenage existence. What do I want to be someday? What adventures and discoveries await in the world outside? These questions have a bitter aftertaste when perspectives in one's homeland are limited and war destroys the places that once provided comfort and familiarity. Alas, what it cannot destroy are their hopes, dreams and tender curiosity, which they satisfy with a journey to the Himalayas. Guided by an empathic gaze and unobtrusive camerawork, Alisa Kovalenko, who previously appeared in the goEast Competiton (2019) with her film HOME GAMES, paints a portrait of a young generation that has the courage to strive for the beautiful in life with disarming humanity, though surrounded by the ravages of war.
