WE'RE ALL CHRISTS

Adam Miauczynski, 50, cultural theorist, has spent many years struggling to overcome his drink problem. We now see him in conversation with his son Sylvester, who tells his father how he used to long for him to die. As the men talk, the memories come flooding back, and the picture that emerges is one of three generations whose lives were blighted by alcoholism and helplessness. The unsparing account given by director Marek Koterski is full of psychological insight, free from finger-wagging, sensitive to the men’s search for rays of hope. Adam and Sylvester eventually escape from the vicious circle – helped not by the angelic figures that intervene in this drama but by the power of empathy and love.
