WINTER SONG

goEast Gurus

He who has nothing is simply flattened, literally – like the confused tramp in Otar Iosseliani’s most recent film, who is then slid unceremoniously under the door so that he doesn’t cause anyone any trouble. In WINTER SONG, the Georgian director, to whom goEast devoted the Homage in 2010, brings a fleet-footed and anarchic approach to an episodic story of revolution, war, friendship and how everything fits together. In the process, he summons a marvellously surreal grin to our lips when the door to paradise opens and promptly fades away before our eyes upon the ringing of a mobile phone. The amusing codes of this composition are highly relevant at this moment in time, for “when things are very serious, then it is hard to talk about them seriously” (O. I.).
