YUGOSLAVIA, HOW IDEOLOGY MOVED OUR COLLECTIVE BODY

Beyond Belonging

Double Feature:
Crowds attending the International Labour Day parade – a relay race run on The Day of Youth – Tito’s state funeral – Milošević’s first political rallies in Belgrade – archival footage from 1945 to 2000 furnishes the basis of Marta Popivoda’s analysis of the way her country chose to present itself in visuals, and of the hero worship thus engendered. The 1982-born filmmaker adds her personal recollections to the assembled footage. The result is an impressive experimental documentary charting a process of societal transformation stretching from communist Yugoslavia to the neo-liberal Serbia of today. In cooperation with Heinrich Böll Foundation Hessen e.V.
