ZEFIRO TORNA OR SCENES FROM THE LIFE OF GEORGE MACIUNAS

Specials

“He said, it hurt less when he’s curled into the baby-in-the-womb position.” In the end, one can see a smiling George Maciunas on his sickbed. Then: images recorded at his funeral. In this intimate portrait, Jonas Mekas remembers his friend and fellow countryman, but above all he pays homage to Maciunas the artist. In the 1960s, Maciunas founded the Fluxus group in Wiesbaden and Mekas created a cinematic monument to him in 1992 with ZEFIRO TORNA. In oftentimes associative montages, Maciunas’ great joie de vivre becomes apparent, as well as the way he understood how to live through his art in spite of his illness.
